Rab and his sordid band of misfits are caught up in the siege of Emylon, their home town. The 'rebels' have finally revolted against an ill-respected king and the time has arrived for a decisive showdown. When his younger brother dies after an attack by a mythical chimera, he sets out on a path of revenge against the creature and a city guard who prevent him from reaching his defenseless brother in time. But war and strange circumstances have a way of altering ones' perception and Rab is about to witness and do things that will change his life in ways he never thought possible.

Some thoughts on "Mercy"...
1.) a short and easy read.
2.) the quality of writing and the level of skills in story telling were well above the average.
3.) the action vs. drama ratio was about perfect. The author's sense of pace and timing was spot on.
4.) several encounters that were brutal, graphic and chilling in their description.
5.a) an intriguing plot filled with an assortment of interesting characters...characters that had a surprising amount of depth, given the length of the tale.
5.b) one of the areas that I thought was particularly well done was the hackneyed conversations amongst our band of would-be heroes. Their inflection on the local vernacular was consistant with their poor backgrounds and limited, if any, education.
6.) the physical settings... the town, the streets, battle sites etc. were well described... lending an earthy ambience and realistic atmosphere to the entire story.
7.) believable characters and events within the context of a fantasy setting.
Conclusion.
A short fantasy work of the highest quality, in both the writing and the ability to spin a tale..
Held my attention and interest to the very end.
